What is a parenting coordinator?

I (Dr. D’Arienzo) am asked this question often. The best way to explain to someone new to the divorce process about parenting coordination, is that a parenting coordinator is an individual typically ordered by the Judge to assist the mother and father once a parenting plan has been created and agreed upon, yet one or both parties has difficulty following the agreed upon or court ordered parenting plan. Also a Judge will order a parenting coordinator to be involved when the mother and father continue to have great conflict with the other or fail to communicate properly. Other times a parenting coordinator is utilized when a family requires oversight because there is concern about one of the parents having a mental health problem or anger issue, or the parents needs extra assistance to ensure their child receives the care that is needed, and the parents are challenged because one or both of their agendas becomes a priority rather than the best interest of their children. Again, parenting coordination is typically ordered, and it works best when it is ordered by a Judge and it is ordered for an extended period of time like one to two years rather than six months. When it is short, the problem parent typically counts time rather than improves their behavior. Further, parenting coordinators are typically paid by both parents equally. Other times, each parent pays a certain percentage, and more rarely, one party pays for the entire service. It typically costs 150 to 350 dollars per hour depending on the level of credentialing and experience of the parenting coordinator.  A parenting coordinator is typically much less expensive that the use of attorneys. Typically a parenting coordinator can settle disputes for the parties rather than the utilization of both attorneys and the court system.

Do I need a parenting coordinator?

You may need a parenting coordinator if you are at your wits end with your ex-spouse regarding poor communication and poor co-parenting or due to an ex-spouse’s unacceptable behavior. If you are reading this webpage, you are likely having trouble with co-parenting and you are seeking answers. I would suggest that you contact your attorney and speak to them about hiring a parenting coordinator.

Jacksonville Parenting Coordinator Announcement!

Jacksonville Parenting Coordination will continue at D’Arienzo Psychological Group. We are proud to announce that both Dr. Justin D’Arienzo, Jacksonville Psychologist, and Ms. Cynthia Salameh, Jacksonville Attorney, were recently approved by the Fourth Circuit to continue to provide parenting coordination despite the more stringent qualifications that came into effect in Florida on January 1, 2015. Our parenting coordinators were in favor of the more stringent laws in order to ensure the public is protected by ensuring the most qualified professionals are providing this important service to families. Please see our parenting coordinator’s approval letters below. Once they are re-approved in the Seventh Circuit, the letters will be attached as well.
