Why Choosing a Psychologist Matters for Your Mental Health

Choosing who you see for mental health care truly matters. While the titles psychologist, therapist, and counselor are often used interchangeably, the differences in training, expertise, and scope of practice are significant and they can greatly affect your outcome in therapy or psychological care.

  • Psychologist

Licensed Psychologists (PhD or PsyD) hold both master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology, completing over 10,000 hours of advanced education and clinical training. Their expertise spans human behavior, neuroscience, psychological assessment, and evidence-based treatment. Through doctoral coursework, supervised practice, research, and licensing exams, psychologists are uniquely qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and treat a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral conditions. They are experts in individual, couples and group therapy too both evaluating and treating people from a psychobiosocial approach. They are typically the therapy trainers of therapists and counselors

  • Therapist or Counselor

Master’s-level therapists and counselors (LCSW, LPC, LMHC, or LMFT) with degrees in social work, counseling, and therapy, complete 2,000 to 3,000 hours of graduate study centered on counseling techniques and supportive interventions. They help clients manage stress, relationships, and life challenges through talk therapy and guidance. However, their training is more limited in psychological theory, behavioral science, and treatment methodology, making their approach less clinical and comprehensive than that of doctoral-level psychologists; however, they are extremely effective marriage counselors and individual therapists.

Prescription Privileges for Specially Trained Psychologists

Psychologists are scientist-practitioners relying on real evidence and science when treating and evaluating patients. Adding to this training model, I want to share something I’m genuinely excited about that is both a personal and professional milestone that reflects my commitment to the evolving profession of psychology and expands what I hope to one day be able to offer patients in Florida.

In May 2026, I graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Postdoctoral Master’s Program in Clinical Psychopharmacology, an American Psychological Association’s (APA) designated program that prepares licensed psychologists for prescriptive authority in states where it is permitted. More recently (July 2026), I passed the Psychopharmacology Examination for Psychologists (PEP). The PEP is the national exam required for psychologists to pass who want to prescribe. It is an arduous test covering topics from clinical medicine, neuroscience, laboratory interpretation, general pharmacology to psychopharmacology. Passing it marks another real step forward in building advanced competency in this area. I worked my tail off to complete the program and pass the PEP while running our business, remaining active in the community and with my family, and seeing patients over the last two and a half years. My next step with psychopharmacology is to gain authority to prescribe in Louisiana and New Mexico. I will keep you updated.
