THE IMPORTANCE OF PARTICIPATION IN PREMARITAL COUNSELING OR TAKING A PREMARITAL PREPARATION CLASS

Written by Michael Nackashi, DPG Psychology Student Intern

There is no doubt that marriage is one of the most demanding relationships that we commit to in our lifetime.  It is a commitment that requires attention and effort in order to enjoy its exciting and lasting benefits.  However, it is not just attention and effort that’s needed, but attention and effort that is focused in the right direction.  With the divorce rate on the rise, many couples are curious as to how they can set their marriage up for success.

Most couples favor the idea that their love will get them through hard times; however, it’s almost the opposite.  Couples need to develop good communication skills that help them face adversity so that their love for each other doesn’t get buried underneath trivial problems and false perceptions.  The best way to kick-off a successful marriage is not by having the perfect wedding, but by being properly prepared.

Participating in a premarital preparation course is a responsible first step toward a healthy marriage.  This preparation course helps couples understand their partner more thoroughly by doing fun and interactive exercises.  These exercises teach couples essential skills like communication, problem solving, decision making and effectively handling conflict.  Communication is a skill that is strongly focused on in these courses, it is important to understand your partner’s communication style so that misunderstandings can be avoided.  A couple should not let their love be compromised by gaps in communication and unresolved conflict; these skills fill those gaps and sort the conflict so that more time can be spent enjoying a long-lasting marriage.

Obviously, if a couple decides to take their relationship to the next step with marriage, they are more than willing to make an extraordinary effort; premarital preparation courses focus that effort in the right direction.
